Pet Turf and Dog Runs in Stamford CT

If you have a dog you know what they do to a lawn. They give your lawn a beating day after day but you love that they can enjoy the yard. Our pet turf and dog runs in Stamford, CT fix all of that with synthetic turf built for daily use by dogs. We install pet turf for full backyards, side yard runs, front yards, small potty areas off the patio, and any areas that your dog uses frequently. Every system is designed to drain fast, stay clean, and hold up to dogs that love to run, play and dig.

Why Dogs are Hard on Natural Grass

Dog urine is high in nitrogen which burns grass and leaves dead brown patches behind. Dogs also wear down the same paths every day and dig wherever the soil is soft. After a rainy week your yard likely turns into a mud pit and you're wiping paws at the back door. Reseeding and patching never really keeps up. Artificial turf takes the problem away completely. Urine can't burn it, paws can't dig through it, it always looks great, and it doesn't turn to mud.

Permeable Backing That Drains Fast

The backing is the most important part of a pet turf system. Standard turf drains through small punched holes spaced across the backing. That works for a regular lawn, but in a dog area liquid can sit between the holes and start to smell. Our pet turf uses fully permeable backing so urine drains straight down across the whole surface. Underneath o0ur turf is a compacted stone base that carries it away and lets the area rinse clean with a garden hose.

Odor Control Infill

Infill is the material brushed down between the turf blades. For pet areas we recommend an odor-control infill like zeolite. Zeolite is a natural mineral that traps the ammonia in urine and releases it when the turf gets rinsed or rained on. It makes a big difference in July and August when warm weather makes odors worse. We can also use coated infills that stay cleaner and run cooler in direct sun.

Dog Runs for Every Size Yard

Not everyone wants to turf the whole backyard. A lot of Stamford homeowners just need a dedicated spot for the dog. We can accommodate any design vision as we typically build dog runs along side yards, behind garages, in small fenced areas, in portions of a backyard, in the front yard fenced in areas, and many more. These are popular in neighborhoods with tighter lots like Glenbrook, Springdale and the East Side. A run gives your dog a clean place to go and keeps the rest of the yard looking good.

Keeping Pet Turf Clean

Pet turf is easy to keep nice and clean. Pick up solid waste the same way you would on grass and rinse the area with a hose once a week in warm weather and less often in the cooler months. Picking up promptly also keeps bacteria from washing into storm drains and local waterways which the EPA calls out as a real source of water pollution.  Rain does a lot of the work for you by giving periodic washes of the turf. If you have more than one dog or a high-use potty area we reccomend a turf-safe enzyme cleaner every few weeks helps keep it fresh. We also offer pet turf cleaning visits for a deeper clean once or twice a year.

Safe and Comfortable for Paws

The synthetic turf we install for pets is non-toxic and lead-free. We don't use crumb rubber infill in pet areas as it's one less thing for your dog to chew on, not to mention it holds less heat. Turf can get warm in direct summer sun. If your dog's area is wide open, we'll recommend a cooler infill and a quick rinse brings the temperature down fast on hot days.

Every pet turf project starts with a free site visit. We'll look at where your dog spends the most time and recommend the right turf and infill for your setup.

What Goes Wrong With a Poor Pet Turf Install

Pet turf only works if it's built right from the ground up. A lot of the problems people blame on artificial grass come from shortcuts during installation. Some installers use the wrong backing or skip a proper base. Others leave out pet infill to save money. The turf may look fine on day one but the problems show up within a few months of daily use. Below are some common things to look our for and ensure whichever contractor you choose is doing the job right.

Odor That Won't Go Away

Lingering smell is the most common complaint about pet turf and usually means the backing isn't fully permeable and is preventing draining. We use fully permeable backing over a free-draining stone base and add odor-control infill.

Puddles After Rain or Rinsing

If water sits on the surface after you hose it down thats a telltale sign the base wasn't graded properly. Standing water traps odor and bacteria so this step is essential. We grade every pet area with a slight pitch so water moves down through the stone and away from the house.

Edges Pulled Up by Dogs

Dogs love to dig and chew at loose edges. If the perimeter isn't secured tight your adorable and curious dog can pull it up in an afternoon. We fasten every edge with spikes or a bender board border so there's nothing for paws or teeth to grab.

Flattened Run Paths

Dogs tend to run the same route along the fence every day. Thin low-density turf flattens out in those paths and starts to look worn. Pet-grade turf with a denser build and the right infill springs back and keeps an even look across the whole yard.

Weeds Coming Through

Skipping the weed barrier or leaving organic material in the base lets weeds push up through the drainage holes. Pulling weeds out of turf is no fun and plain and simple shouldn't happen. We clear the area down to clean soil and lay weed barrier before the base and turf go in.

Turf That Gets Too Hot

Any synthetic turf gets warmer than grass in full sun but some products and infills get much hotter than others. In open and sunny yards we use lighter-colored or coated infill that runs cooler. That makes a real difference for paws on summer afternoons.

A pet turf system is only as good as the work underneath it. If you're also thinking about artificial lawn installation for the rest of the yard, or a backyard putting green, we can quote everything at the same visit. Call us for a free estimate.

Our Pet Turf Installation Process

A pet turf installation looks a lot like a standard artificial lawn with a few improvements that make a big difference for dogs. We take extra care with drainage and the edges. The turf and infill we choose are made to handle pet urine and decrease heat of the turf. Most pet areas are finished in one to three days depending on the size of the project. Your dog can usually use the new turf the same day we leave. Here's how the job goes from start to finish.

Site Visit and Plan

We start by watching how your dog uses the yard. We note where they run and where they go to the bathroom. Then we measure and review the area and recommend the right turf and infill. You get a written quote before anything is scheduled.

Excavation and Drainage Base

We remove the old grass and roots and dig down a few inches. A weed barrier goes in and then a crushed stone base that's compacted and graded with a slight pitch. This base is what lets urine and rinse water drain away fast. It also keeps the surface from sinking or puddling.

Turf and Secure Edges

We roll out pet-grade turf with fully permeable backing and join the seams so they stay tight under daily use. Every edge gets fastened down firmly or tucked behind a border so there's nothing loose for a dog to grab and pull. Corners and fence lines get extra attention since that's where dogs dig.

Infill and Final Rinse

We brush in odor-control infill to stand the blades up and help manage smells. A final rinse settles everything into place. Before we leave we walk you through simple cleaning tips so the turf stays fresh for years.

Whether you need a full backyard or a small potty area off the deck we'll build a pet turf system that fits your yard and your dog. We're the local pros when it comes to pet turf and we love turning your backyard into a low maintenance oasis for your pup. Call Stamford Artificial Grass today for a free estimate.
